The problem was more in how they consistently and unquestioningly made it Kurt’s responsibility to help him, IMO.
Highlighted further with emphasis on how he failed to answer Karofsky’s calls, I think.

He immediately said that after their history Kurt had no reason at all to return his calls. I agree that the God Squad should have been a little more helpful towards him and a little less 'let's argue about whose pain is the worst', though.

Yep, their much touted bullying storyline was done for as soon as they made Karofsky gay, because I knew he’d become the sympathetic victim somehow and have all his misdeeds retconned. Also Kurt-Finn vs Karofsky-Kurt is an ALARMING discrepancy.
